In a demolition drive in the Peenya Industrial Area (Ward 11) on Wednesday, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike recovered nine acres of encroached land.

Nearly 3000 people, mainly construction labourers from north Karnataka, were evicted in the nearly 90-minute demolition drive at Ashrayanagar and on 5th Main Road, Peenya II stage.

Tension prevailed for a while when residents resisted the demolition and small time politicians, posing as social workers, backed them. Their attempts to drive away the demolition squad by setting one of the huts on fire also failed.

As many as 600 gangmen and 500 police personnel were involved in the drive.
