66 legislators grab BDA sites

66 legislators grab BDA sites
R Venkatesh, Bangalore, DH News Service:
CM B S Yeddyurappa has hurriedly passed orders directing the Bangalore Development Authority to allot 50x80 sites to 66 politicians, just a few days before the Lok Sabha election notification.

When thousands of Bangaloreans are desperately awaiting allotment letters for sites from the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), some newly elected MLAs who are yet to complete a year in office, have managed to get plots in Bangalore City.

As per records available with Deccan Herald, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has hurriedly passed orders directing the Bangalore Development Authority to allot 50x80 sites to 66 politicians, just a few days before the Lok Sabha election notification.

The Government Order (245:08-09) was passed to allot the sites under the “G” category. BJP men top the list with 58 names — 53 MLAs and five MLCs, including three independents.

Just to avoid allegations of nepotism, eight Congressmen, including two MLCs, have also been allotted sites.
Affluent BJP MLAs such as Dr D Hema Chandra Sagar (Chickpet), Karunakara Reddy (Harapanahalli), Dr Ashwath Narayan CN (Malleswaram), Nandeesh Reddy (KR Puram), SR Vishwanath (Yelahanka) and G Narasimhaswamy (Doddaballapur) have managed to get these sites.

Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat and KGF MLA Y Sampangi (KGF), who hit the headlines last year for all the wrong reasons, have also won the CM’s favour.

As many as 15 politicians belonging to the backward classes—12 from the Scheduled Classes and 3 from the Scheduled Tribes—have also been shortlisted for the BDA sites.

Arkavathi Layout row

It was in 2003-04 that the BDA incurred the wrath of the people while allotting sites in Arkavathi Layout.

Though a record number of more than 2.5 lakh applications were received and nearly 20,000 were shortlisted, only 2,000 people got allotment letters. This time, too, the sale deeds are incomplete due to various reasons.

Politicians and chief minister’s close associates — gunmen and people who work at the CM’s residence and office—regularly manage to get stray sites allotted.

Independent MLAs on the list include Goolihatti D Shekar (Hosadurga), Narendra Swamy (Malavalli) and Sivaraj Tangagadi (Kanakagiri). The Anglo-Indian nominee Derrick M D Fullinfaw has also walked away with a site.

Meanwhile, an error in the government order caused Vijayanagar MLA M Krishnappa (Layout Krishnappa) to panic. When Deccan Herald contacted and congratulated him on getting a BDA site, a shocked Krishnappa said: “I never asked for one or intend to. Give me some time, I will get back to you. You have got some wrong information.”

However, after cross checking, it was learnt that misplacement of initials was the reason for the confusion. Krishnappa M of Bangalore South was the beneficiary.
